Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, Deirdre Heavey @gallivantingwdeirj is a Washington, D.C.-based journalist. As an NBC News segment producer and former politics reporter, Deirdre is an ambitious 20-something paving her own way in an ever-changing industry.
A book lover, she prefers Goodreads to Instagram ads and FaceTime to texting—although she’d choose handwritten letters above the rest. Her happy place is a Sunday morning soccer game on the National Mall, getting lost in a museum or the occasional hula hoop session in her studio apartment.
If she never had to work another day in her life, Deirdre would go full Walden by Thoreau, spending her days hiking and writing in a cabin between the mountains and the sea.
A politics junkie who believes in compromise, her stories take on the social and the political through a personal lens. She believes in second chances, living each day like it’s her last and putting herself first.
mission
Deirdre is a writer, first and foremost. What began with late-night scribblings in notebooks soon evolved into the cathartic experience of journaling. In the safe space between the binds of her innumerable journals, Deirdre discovered authenticity through writing.
Journalism presented an opportunity for Deirdre to not just tell her story, but to replicate her safe space for others, connecting with real people and sharing their stories. This commitment to community sparked creativity that goes beyond the page. This website is the eclectic expression of Deirj (and her gallivanting along the way).
